Samsung Ativ Book 6 Review

The Samsung Ativ Book 6 is a 15.6-inch notebook, which should address the requirements of average users. With its fiber glass and aluminum design, the laptop is visually appealing and sturdy, but unfortunately there’s no room for a standard DVD drive. The 1080p display is manufactured by AU Optronics, which is generally an excellent TN panel with acceptable viewing angle stability.

It is powered by an Intel Core i7 3635QM processor. Unfortunately, the single 8GB DDR3 RAM is soldered and users need to insert a similar RAM module to enable the dual-channel capability.

The Samsung Ativ Book 6 uses a 1TB 5400rpm with respectable transfer data speed at 82.4Mbps, although the access time is a quite slow. The HD Graphics 4000 is the standard integrated graphics solution for an Intel Core i7 Ivy Bridge processor. For an enhanced gaming and graphics performance, Samsung decides to include the rather powerful Radeon HD 8770M GPU clocked at 775MHz and with 1GB of GDDR5 video RAM.

The notebooks should switch smoothly between dedicated and integrated GPU. Some less demanding games may deliver excellent frame rates despite the maximum graphics settings. The Book 6 is rather quiet and the fan noise shouldn’t be bothersome or obtrusive even with heavy use.
