Western Digital brings us a new innovation through its subsidiary, HSGT, in the form of Travelstar 5K1500, a 1.5TB HDD (hard disk drive) designed for laptops. The spacious hard drive should be shipped in June, but the company didn’t unveil any pricing detail.
A senior employee from HGST stressed that HDDs can still have a strong involvement in the laptop industry, thanks to their relatively lower costs. On the other hand, more expensive laptop categories such as convertibles and ultrabooks can benefit from SSDs and SSD-HDD hybrids.
HGST is known for its contribution in the 2.5” market and the new Travelstar 5K1500 should solidify its position in the market. Running at 5400rpm, the company claims that the 1.5TB HDD runs faster than HGST’s other 5400rpm models, according to PCMark 7 and PCMark Vantage benchmark tools. The improved performance can be achieved through the use of 6Gbps SATA interface and 32MB cache buffer.
